KeepReels does not download YouTube videos. This guide covers your own uploads using YouTube Studio and Google Takeout. You do not need to paste a YouTube link into KeepReels or give it access to your Google account.
Start with the outcome you need: one video file for a project, an archive of your uploads, or a video you can watch offline. Those are different tasks, even when each screen uses the word “download.”
Download one of your uploads with YouTube Studio
Use a computer for these steps:
- Open YouTube Studio and sign in to the account for the channel that uploaded the video.
- Select Content in the left navigation.
- Find the video, open its three-dot menu, and choose Download.
- Find the saved MP4 in your browser's downloads. Play it to check the picture, sound, and duration before using it in another project.
YouTube's official upload-download instructions describe Studio downloads as 720p or 360p, depending on the video size. Do not assume that an upload available in 1080p or 4K will come back at that resolution through this menu.
If you still have your original recording or editing export, compare that file with the downloaded copy before choosing one for further editing.
Export your uploads with Google Takeout
For an archive, open Google Takeout with the account that owns the uploads:
- Deselect products you do not need, keeping the YouTube product selected. If data-selection options are available, include videos and exclude unrelated data.
- Continue to Next step. Choose a one-time export, ZIP format, an archive size, and delivery by email download link.
- Select Create export. Once Google's email arrives, follow its link and download the archive. Larger exports may arrive in several parts.
- Extract the archive on your computer and inspect the video files.
Google's Takeout instructions say YouTube videos export in their original format or as MP4 with H.264 video and AAC audio. An export can take minutes to days; it is not an instant link converter. Exporting does not remove the uploads from Google.
If videos are missing, check whether the channel uses a Brand Account and switch to the account used to upload them before exporting again.
Why is the Studio download option unavailable?
YouTube lists several restrictions: a removed video, a copyright or Community Guidelines strike, a preapproved audio track, or reaching five downloads of that video within 24 hours. See the troubleshooting section of its download help page for the current conditions.
Check the affected video's status instead of repeatedly clicking Download. If the daily limit is the cause, wait for it to reset. KeepReels cannot resolve a channel restriction or recover a removed upload.
Is YouTube offline viewing the same as an MP4 download?
No. The YouTube app's offline copies are encrypted and played inside the app; they are not ordinary MP4 files you can move into an editor or find in your phone's gallery. Offline availability depends on the video, location, and applicable membership options. YouTube explains this in its offline download FAQ.
For a file of your own upload, use Studio or Takeout. For watching within YouTube, use its available offline feature. A video appearing under the app's Downloads section does not confirm that you have an exportable backup.
Can I download an MP3 from the YouTube app?
YouTube's offline FAQ says the YouTube app does not download audio, music, or MP3 files. Offline playback does not provide a separate MP3 you can export. KeepReels also has no YouTube-to-MP3 converter.
If you need audio for your own production, start with your original recording or editing project and its audio export options.
What if someone else uploaded the video?
This walkthrough is for uploads on your own channel. If you need a reusable file from another creator, ask them for the source file and permission for your intended use. These instructions do not offer a way to download arbitrary YouTube links.
For an Instagram post or Reel instead, see the Instagram video download tool or Reels download tool. Those tools accept supported public Instagram links only.
